1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Can you remember a time in your life when you worshiped God with exceptional passion? I’ve felt tremendous joy in worship many times, but the times that are most memorable to me have been when I’ve felt God’s loving presence in times of personal weakness, conviction, and sadness. It may seem antithetical, but those are times that have produced some of the greatest blessings in my life.
In the same way, the truth contained in The Beatitudes should produce our greatest blessings. Think about it: spiritual beggars receive the kingdom, those who mourn are comforted, the meek inherit the earth, and those who hunger and thirst are satisfied. The fulfillment of these promises are the greatest imaginable blessings, but they come to us through totally unexpected conditions.
That is why we are taking this coming Sunday to pause in the middle of our study in the Beatitudes to reflect on what we’ve learned and to actively participate in and celebrate these blessings through worship. I trust that you will be “blessed” as we sing, pray, examine our hearts, and rejoice in who God is and what he’s done for us. Pastor Nate and Casey will be leading in Myerstown, and Pastor Jerry and I will be in Lancaster. To prepare, listen to the worship set, read over the passage above and you can even review your notes from the past few Sundays.
Excited to worship with you this Sunday!
