“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. “ – Psalm 119:105
It’s dark outside. I’m not speaking rhetorically. As I type this at 3:03 PM on Friday afternoon, the view outside my office window is dreary, damp, and dark. To be honest, I’m not a fan of the dark this time of year. I don’t mind winter. I can even get along with some snow from time to time. But these short days…? They are for the raccoons and other nocturnal vermin, not us. Can I get a witness on this? If you agree, perhaps you can join me in counting down the days until March 8, when we “add” an extra hour of daylight back to our Vitamin D depleted days.
Have you stopped to consider what it is about the dark that we don’t like? For me, I simply dislike the dark because I can’t see. I like to see where I’m going. I like to know what’s coming and have clarity on the path that is before me. Light is a powerful resource that improves my life in every way. Without it, I’m stubbing toes, stepping on legos, and tripping over the dog.
By now you know the turn is coming. What the light is for my eyes, God’s Word is for my soul. God’s Word helps us to see what we would otherwise be blind to. It guides us on the path of life when we don’t know the way. It warns us of obstacles, makes our path clear, and even shows us the way up when we fall. I love God’s Word because I love the light. I love the light because I love to see and know. Above all, the Bible was given to us by God to light our path so that that we can know and honor Him.
This week, as we begin our series called “Basics: Gaining Confidence in the Bible,” we are going to start off on this point. God gave us this book. And because He wrote it, it can be trusted to be THE lamp to our feet and THE light to our paths. We need not look anywhere else for our confidence and faith. Take a couple of moments to read 2 Peter 1:16-21 and consider the confidence we can have in God’s Word. I pray over these next few weeks that our path is lit more clearly than ever before by the lamp and light of God’s Word!
