“15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. 16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word” – Psalm 119:15–16
A penny for your thoughts?
When I read that opening sentence, I hear it in my grandmother’s voice. Each time I saw her, there would be some point when the conversation would grow quiet. As a teenage boy, my mind would drift; and she would call me back to her attention with this question in the form of a statement, “A penny for your thoughts?” Honestly, I have no clue what may have been going through my mind in those days. More than likely I was thinking about sports, motorcycles, or some other deep subject that consumes a young man’s brain.
Nevertheless, it is a fascinating memory that leads me to ask you, “A penny for your thoughts?” What’s on your mind? When you’re relaxed and your mind is free to drift, where does it go? The psalmist above says his thoughts go to the Word of God! Wouldn’t it be great if at any moment someone offered you a penny for your thoughts you could say, “I’m thinking about God’s Word.” Maybe this moment is a good moment for us to practice that. Think about what the Bible says about God. Then think about what it says about you. Now consider what it says about those you love. Is there anything better to set your mind on?
This week, Pastor Nate is going to help our minds come to a clear and confident understanding of God’s Word. After all, if we are going to meditate on God’s Word, we certainly want to be sure that we understand what it’s saying. If you haven’t heard Pastor Nate preach, you are about to soon learn how much He loves God and how highly he regards the authority of the Bible. His passion for accuracy makes him the perfect man to give us the tools for proper Bible study. Take some time and read 2 Timothy 2:14-16 and come ready to learn how to live out this verse for yourself as a studier of God’s Word. I’m fired up because I know you will leave equipped and motivated to dig into God’s Word for yourself.
